A Maryland native, Dr. Eric J. Coy brings up-to-date orthodontic training, a strong research background, and a thoughtful approach to every patient he treats. He believes the best care starts with clear communication, so you understand your options and can make informed decisions about your smile.
Dr. Coy takes a conservative, collaborative approach to treatment. He works closely with patients, families, general dentists, and other specialists when needed to create care that fits the whole picture.

Dr. Coy completed his education and specialty training at universities across the country:
- Towson University – Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, and Bioinformatics
- University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry – Doctor of Dental Surgery
- University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry – Orthodontic Residency, Master of Science in Oral Sciences, Chief Resident
Dr. Coy has passed Part I of the American Board of Orthodontics certification examination and is board-eligible in orthodontics.
Dr. Coy's Research, Innovation, & Continuing Education
Dr. Coy has a special interest in how research and technology can improve orthodontic care.
His current research focuses on artificial intelligence and big data. He works with the University of Illinois Chicago Department of Orthodontics to study oral hygiene and gingivitis trends using Dental Monitoring data from patients around the world.
Earlier in his career, he worked with the UCSF Center to Address Disparities in Children’s Oral Health and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health. His research has included machine learning tools for plaque classification and studies of craniofacial genetics.
His work has earned recognition including:
- Dr. Alan G. Brodie Craniofacial Endowed Chair Scholar Award
- World Federation of Orthodontists Best Master’s Thesis Award
Dr. Coy’s research has been published in the Journal of Dentistry and the Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists, with additional work submitted to other dental and orthodontic journals.

Dr. Coy's Personal Life
Dr. Coy grew up in Maryland and is the youngest of four siblings. Today, he lives in Walkersville with his partner, Blake, and their Great Dane, Oliver.
When he is not thinking about teeth or research, you can usually find him spending time with family or following the Commanders and Ravens. He is always happy to talk sports, orthodontics, or both.
Dr. Coy In The Community
Community service has been part of Dr. Coy’s career from the beginning. He has helped develop oral health education programs for grade-school children and has volunteered with community dental clinics that provide care to patients who might not otherwise have access to treatment.
Now that he is back home in Maryland, he is proud to serve the communities that helped shape him.

I love how every patient has a unique personality and clinical challenges, which require solutions tailored specifically to them. My work is never boring, my patients bring excitement and energy to the office, and I see their confidence and self-esteem grow along with their new smile.
My Practice Philosophy
I know that crooked teeth or poor facial balance can have a profound, negative impact on a person’s self-esteem and overall psychological well-being. For this reason, I am always willing to work with patients and their families to ensure treatment begins at an optimal time for the best treatment outcome. In order to do this, my practice offers many financial options and will find terms that work with a family’s budget.
The ultimate goals of orthodontic care include straight teeth, a beautiful smile, and a properly aligned jaw, as well as good facial balance. In the vast majority of patients, this goal is best achieved with a full complement of teeth through the 12-year molars. For this reason, I will only order the extraction of permanent teeth in the most severe cases. I want my patients to have healthy, beautiful smiles, and to keep all of their natural teeth.
Dr. Robison's Education
I earned a Bachelor of Science in microbiology. I was awarded my Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Maryland at Baltimore. Following a year of residency at the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic in Pennsylvania, I completed specialty training in orthodontics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Along with my certificate in orthodontics, I earned a Master of Science for my research on facial growth and development in patients who have cleft lip and palate.
Dr. Robison's Commitment to Continuing Education
I am a lifelong learner and I enjoy paying that forward by being an educator. I’m honored to be certified by the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners to teach continuing education-credited courses on various orthodontic topics. I have taught courses on treatment philosophies and methodologies, the newest technologies, and advances in the specialty of orthodontics.
As an orthodontist, I thoroughly enjoy attending and presenting courses and cases with my dental colleagues. The community collaboration within the dental profession, and especially within the smaller orthodontic profession, is cooperative, rich, and fulfilling.
I attend local continuing education courses on a monthly basis and, if my office is closed, it is most often because I am attending a seminar on advances in orthodontic treatment. I know that in order to maintain the highest standard of patient care, I must always be learning and updating treatment techniques and technologies.

Dr. Robison's Personal Life
I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland and have lived in Frederick since 1992. I’ve been happily married to the love of my life since 1983. We have three sons who are all grown and building their lives in other regions of the country, and toddler boy/girl twin grandchildren and a new granddaughter whom I adore.
When not caring for patients, teaching courses, or studying, I love to work in my vegetable and flower gardens. I also have many hobbies, all of which involve working with my hands: leatherwork, woodwork, jewelry casting, electrical work, painting, and tinkering with computers, to name but a few. As often as possible, I also love visiting my precious grandchildren.
Dr. Robison In The Community
I am heavily involved with church work and serve in a volunteer leadership position.
I also volunteer at the Washington County Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Clinic. This clinic serves people with a variety of craniofacial deformities from western Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
My practice is an active member and screening office for Smiles Change Lives. This non-profit organization works with families to make orthodontic treatment affordable for those with significant orthodontic problems who otherwise would not be able to afford it. We also support local causes with donations of pro bono treatments: giving someone a great smile is the least we can do to support our community.
